Backgrounds in Avowed can affect the starting skills the player has, and the Background you choose will vary depending on the Culture you have selected. As of this writing, not much information has been revealed, but since it is set in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series, we can speculate that backgrounds can also give players specific bonuses, and some backgrounds are not available to all Cultures.
